Pipeline Girth Weld Inspection

Automated ultrasonic inspection was first used (early 1990's) in Canada to examine pipeline girth welds in replacement of radiography. Presently the technique is used onshore and offshore world wide to examine both mechanized weldments as well as manual stick welds. The weld is divided into several zones which are then examined by an array of transducers scanning both sides. Flaw sizing and characterization are enhanced allowing pipline constructors to use Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA's) to minimize unnecessary repairs. Results are faster, more accurate, and more reliable.
